Take Action Project Part 1
Friday night, December 6th, I visited the Shelter of Flint to take part in Family Fun Night. Roger, Celia, Dennaro, Amanda and I volunteered together. We went to set up at 6pm and found out that there'd be about 32 children ranging from ages 4-12 attending Family Fun Night. Petra, the shelter's coordinator said all of the children were so excited about us coming, and that definitely lifted our spirits. We were setting up tables full of crafts for the children to get involved in. An abundant amount of colored construction paper, markers & crayons, glue sticks, scissors, etc. were provided and also brought by Roger. Amanda had supplied us with stickers, glitter, and more for the kids to decorate Christmas cards. Before the children were coming down, we brain stormed some crafts that we could help the children make. We came up with cutting snowflakes, making snowmen, Rudolph, christmas trees, and more! There were tons of crafts that everyone could get involved in making. The children really seemed to enjoy themselves and our company. They gave us hugs, called us by names, and wanted all of our attention. It was a BLAST! I had such a great time and was super impressed with their crafting skills! To end such a wonderful time, Celia had made chocolate chip cookies for all who attended, and Amanda brought flavored candy canes. We got to pass them out after explaining why we were there. Our time ended around 9pm. We are all going back next Friday night, December 13th, to decorate Christmas cookies with them. We're also printing out Christmas themed coloring pages that the children can do. I think this really helped out with the mom's of the children. While we were spending time with the children directing crafts, the mom's were able to do things such as laundry, or even just have time to themselves. In some way, I also think this gave them a hope that there's people within the community coming to help out in any way possible. I'm so excited to go back next week and see the kids again! So far, this has been a beautiful and fun experience! :)
