Final Part of Our Project - Shelter of Flint

My project was helping out at the shelter of flint. I worked in a group and I was really glad I had worked with them. The first time we went we made different things out of paper and little other things. We made snowmen and Santa and a lot of others that was really cool! This time we went back and did other things as well. We ended up decorating cookies and had them color and even after that Roger, Desiree and I helped with the balloon race. The kids looked so happy that we had brought cookies and pictures for them so they could color. I hope they had a ton of fun. I sat with a few of the older kids and they told me that they really liked decorating the cookies.  For the balloon race we would blow up a balloon and have them hold it and they would let go to see whose went the furthest. This time less parents came down because they had things to do. During this time we went to go do things with the kids, their mom or dad were able to do things that needed to be done or even just to have a few moments to themselves. This helped me learn that when people like us come and help it makes them feel happy and maybe hopeful that people are willing to help them. Even though there were mostly single moms, there were a few single fathers who were there as well. Unfortunately we didn’t have a lot of time with Petra who was our coordinator so we didn’t get to have a full interview but she did tell us that it is very great to have the community involved and she was thrilled that we came and let the kids have fun. Overall we had a lot of fun and I know I was excited to see that all the kids were happy!

  1. Even though it was a few days late we did get a few answers from Petra at the Shelter of Flint. Here they are:

Why did you choose to work at the shelter?
It will be two years in March that I became a team member at the Shelter of Flint. Choosing to work here was a twofold opportunity. First, it gave me an opportunity to grow in my professional field as an advocate. And secondly it kept me in the field where my heart and passion is at. Empowering residents who feel they have no hope for their future or who just need someone to listen to their hurts without someone giving an opinion.

How does your job help women in the Flint community?
We have a great team at the Shelter of Flint that work together daily empowering all residents women, men, and children. The residents receive active case management, assistance with job search, if their resumes need to be revised we help in that area as well. We also assist them with housing search. There is much more provided that I did not mention that enable the residents to leave the SOF to attain affordable housing and be productive in the Flint community once again. This is truly a Shelter of Flint team effort.

    In closing:
I would like to say first I am sorry that this was sent to you late. I hope you’re professor accepts this letter and all of you receive the credit all of you so deserve. I cannot thank all of you enough for you’re giving, you’re kindness, and you’re hearts, you’re time, and most importantly you’re interest. We all look forward to seeing you all again.
