Final Take Action Reflection
This last Friday night, December 13th, my group and I went to go volunteer at the Shelter of Flint again. This time we did another Christmas themed Family Fun Night. We decorated Christmas cookies that Amanda and I had brought, made Christmas trees out of ice-cream cones (Roger's idea), colored Christmas pictures, and did a balloon racing activity.
We had a ton of fun with the children! A lot of the kids that were there the previous week returned back and remembered us and our names. It was awesome! The kids got really creative, yet some more messy than others, with their cookie decorating. This definitely brought back childhood memories.
Our group set up tons of decorations for the kids such as sprinkles, M&M's, frosting and more! It was a great time to get involved with the kids and families, especially with Christmas coming up. I think this week brought hope to the families as well, knowing on a Friday night that young adults from our generation would take the time to serve their families. I loved it. As we were leaving, some of the children were asking if we were coming back the following Friday night. That made me smile in seeing that they were excited and got comfortable with us hanging out with them. I'd like to volunteer here again, when possible, to be a constant friend to them. When they see familiar faces, I know it brings hope and a calming nature to them.
Overall, this was a really great experience and great way to end the semester! I'll be thinking of this shelter and thinking of different people to volunteer with. Even my fiancé was interested in what we were up to the past two Friday nights and suggested that him and I went back together on Family Fun night. :)
