Rehabilitation Nursing Services

When I first started this project, I was originally going to volunteer at the YWCA in Flint, Michigan. I had a hard time getting in contact with the coordinator and between both of our schedules, we never found a day and time for me to do my actual volunteering. When I decided that I needed to find a different organization to work with, I started researching. I finally came across an organization called Rehabilitation Nursing Services. When I called and talked to the coordinator, she said that she had a patient who was in a wheelchair from being in a car accident fifty some years ago. She has been abused throughout her whole life from her past husband, other care givers, and loved ones. She is now in this nursing home so workers from the Rehabilitation Nursing Services can care for her and make sure that she lives a good life. The coordinator said that the patient has wanted to plan a Christmas party for her friends so she may need help getting things together for that. I was very excited to help her out! When I got to her place and first met her, she was such a sweetheart! I could tell right away that she was excited that I was there and she appreciated the help. The first thing we did was bake cookies for her Christmas party. She is in a wheelchair and is a paraplegic so she needs help with a lot of things around the house. It was so much fun making cookies with her and helping her do little things around her house. I could tell that it made her day that I was able to come and be with her for a few hours out of the day. After four hours was up, I had to go because I had to get to my dance studio but I did not want to leave! I learned so much from being with her in such a short amount of time. I never realized how much fun we would have together. I could tell that I made an impact on her day just from spending time with her. It made me realize the importance of this class. You don’t always have to make a huge impact on someone’s life. Even doing the smallest things for them can change their lives. It made me feel wonderful knowing that I brightened her day. I was having a blast with her. I might even stop by sometime soon to visit with her again! When I interviewed the coordinator, I found out exactly why she started this organization up. The main reason she started the Rehabilitation Nursing Services was to help better the patients’ lives. She wanted and still does want to make them feel loved and wanted in this world. She wants her patients to live a happy life despite their past. It made me really happy to hear her say that. Some people start a business just for the money. I could tell right away that the coordinator did not choose to open this business for the money; she wanted to make a difference. I am extremely happy that I decided to volunteer at this organization and I hope to continue volunteering in the future!
