Take Action Project Part One
So far on my project, I have gotten all of my service hours completed. I was originally going to volunteer with one of the organizations that were suggested, but I found that none of them really fit my schedule as nicely as I would have liked. So, I decided to volunteer at a local elementary school. I volunteered in the Latchkey program at Elms Elementary in Flushing, Michigan. I got to help put together snacks, help children with their homework, and help them do crafts. This really hit me, helping out there. I got to see a lot of children who were really struggling to get things done when their home lives were difficult. I talked to some children and I could tell it was difficult for them to get things completed and turned in for class in terms of homework when they had to worry about their home life, about never seeing their parents because they both worked full time and they had to help take care of their younger siblings. Being able to help them, and seeing them get visibly less worried when their homework was done and they understood it really made me want to help out in the long term, possibly by becoming a big sister through Big Brothers Big Sisters. From this point on, all I really have to do is to complete my interview with the supervisor of Latchkey.

This sounds like a great opportunity to complete service and get experience working with children as well. I hope you do continue to work with them if you have the time!
