Dot Day

I love the idea of Dot Day.  So far in taking education courses, a lot of my professors have been encouraging us and teaching us how to encourage students who have low self-esteem or little to no confidence.  I know that when I was a student, I was one of those low self-esteem children.  I was pretty shy, and didn’t talk too much to other students.  It wasn’t until I was in the fifth grade where I had a teacher who encouraged me to come out of my shell.  I’ll always remember this specific time in her class where we were having a Father’s Day picnic and we were making gifts/crafts for the men in our lives attending the picnic.  I grew up with out a father in my life, and my fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Phalen, was aware.  During the time we were making gifts/crafts, she spent some extra time around me making sure I felt comfortable and didn’t feel left out.  Thankfully, I was able to make a craft for my Grandfather who was able to attend the picnic.  Mrs. Phalen made me feel just as special, if not more, that I was making a gift for someone special too.  She made me feel like my craft was extraordinary and that I could have created anything I wanted and she would have found it beautiful.  Until this day, my Grandfather still has the gift I made for him in that fifth grade class.  As well as Mrs. Phalen, my Grandfather has been a constant encouragement in my life always challenging me to go further than I believe I can.

When I become a teacher, I’d love to help other students come out of their shell just like my fifth grade teacher did.  I wouldn’t want any of my students feeling left out or unimportant.

I will remember The Dot in this class when I’m commenting on other students blogs.  I want my comments to be an encouragement and a source of comfort knowing that someone is taking the time to read their blog and write a helpful/encouraging comment.  I will also remember the Dot in this class when Dr. Annie is sending out reminders and helpful comments towards our blogs as well.
