Dot Day

The Dot could be used more than one way in the classroom and also in my life. In the classroom I could use this on National Dot Day on September 15 every year and get the students to make dots, be creative and expand on them by brainstorming how to use make their mark in the words. I could also use this during a time in class when a student is feeling a little discouraged. This is a great inspirational book for children. I believe the purpose of teachers is not only to teach, but help, encourage, and influence students in a positive way.

There are other ways "Make your mark" and "Dot Day" is used in my life like with helping my 5 year old little sister doing homework. At times it can definitely be frustrating and I don't understand why she's so stubborn when it comes to school and homework. Over this past weekend I went back home and she was doing her homework. The whole time before, during and after she whined and cried about not knowing how to her homework. So I told her a "story" about me. I told her how I did homework and grew up and now I have super powers and can get through my homework even when I don't think I can and I'm really smart get something special every time my grades are turned in. To her something special is candy and toys so I wasn't too specific so she did it! i was ecstatic! This was a sweet and simple way of encouragement and inspiration I did over the weekend and felt complete. Having a little sister and helping my mom is not only me creating my mark, but a bit of motivation and push to completing my mark!

This also relates to my life because I am in a sorority and the office I work for both involves working with children, making my mark and seeing where it will take me. In my sorority we have a mentoring program that oversees middle school girls in the Genesee County. And for my job I work with incoming high school students up until they graduate high school. In big fields we are encouraging them, mentoring, teaching, inspiring, and letting them express themselves and be creative. I really like the idea of Dot Day and I will continue to use this in my life and in my teaching career!
