International Dot Day

One day, when I am a teacher, I would love to use the book The Dot. I think that it is a great lesson in how each individual person can make a difference, no matter how small it starts out. It immediately made me think of when I was in sixth grade and we went to the soup kitchen. Each week, five or six students from the sixth grade would go to the North Flint Soup Kitchen to help serve food to the homeless. Even though everyone looked forward to it as a way to get out of class, it ended up being a much different experience. When it was my week, I went with two of my best friends and we expected to be a fun and easy field trip. Instead, we ended up lugging boxes from room to room and helping to cook and serve the food. The look of gratitude on people's faces to get a warm meal was humbling. Where I lived, we didn't really see anyone who was homeless. It was something that we hadn't been exposed to. Through that experience, we got to see what a difference one person could make. For me, being only eleven, it was something that I will remember for the rest of my life. When I become a teacher, I would like to deliver this same experience to my students. Just like the book, I would like my students to make their mark and see where it takes them. It could be a lesson that they carry with them for the rest of their lives.
